Primary Academy

Year 5 (The Leopards)

Fortnight beginning 20.1.20

Year 5 have been really enjoying their music sessions this term. We have been learning about how music is used in movies. We have looked at good examples, drawn our own story boards and have now begun to create our own music to accompany them. We have published our myths based on the story of The Snow Leopard. The children have really impressed us with their use of language and fronted adverbials. In Maths, we have started to look at how we can tackle tricky worded problems.

Fortnight beginning 6.1.20

We have had a fabulous start to 2020 in Year 5! As part of our new topic, Pole to Pole, we have been looking at a beautiful book based in the Himalayan mountains call The Snow Leopard. We have used our computing skills researching and making our own presentations on life in the Himalayas. We have used a page of the story to rewrite using adverbials, verbs and expanded noun phrases on post-it notes to look at how we can build sentences in different ways. We also looked at how we can use dialogue to move the story on. The children have done an amazing job and are now ready to rewrite the myth in their own words. We have also really enjoyed some practical maths sessions investigating fractions using Numicon. This understanding will really help us to problem solve.

Fortnight beginning 25.11.19

Year 5 had a wonderful time at Natureland on Friday, as part of our geography work looking at biomes. We got to meet Bella the boa constrictor and Olly the rescued baby seal, along with many other rescued animals. We wonder if they will take inspiration from any other children’s names from our class. In English, we have been working hard on our own Caves of Wonders narratives based on Aladdin. Our focus has been how to entertain and grip the reader with our stories using varied sentence structure. These will be entered into a GAT Trust story writing competition. Fingers crossed…..

Fortnight beginning 11.11.19

Year 5 have had a soup-er couple of weeks! We had a trip to Aldi where we learned all about seasonal vegetables, then we came back to school to peel and chop, making a delicious soup. In English, we have been looking at the features of newspapers. The children have enjoyed exploring First News, our Primary newspaper, looking at what makes a great article. We cannot wait to see their published pieces this week!

Fortnight beginning 14.10.19

In Year 5, we have had great fun writing our last pieces of work from our class text, Beowulf. We have hot-seated some of the main characters, thinking of interesting questions and answers as if we were King Hrothgar and Beowulf. We have produced thoughtful diary entries and written letters home. In DT, we have been looking at why we should eat healthily. We used a conscience ally, where the children had to give reasons why Mrs Ryan should eat fruit and vegetables or why she should have sweets and chocolate. We then created persuasive posters for vegetable soup ready to sell for Children in Need.

Fortnight beginning 30.09.19

We have had a very active couple of weeks in Leopard Class. In PE this term, we have really enjoyed taking part in tag rugby. Our last rugby lesson with Mr Parker finished with an exciting rugby style game where all the adults joined in too! In Science, we have been questioning what a fair test looks like. We have learned all about Eliud Kipchoge’s amazing marathon time and why it did not count as a world record. We ran our own kilometre around (and around) the playground to see how fast we were in comparison. The children have also continued to wow us with their own legends in English and calculation skills in Maths.

Fortnight beginning 16.09.19

We have had an extremely exciting visit in Y5 from PCSO Claire to talk to us about joining the Mini Police. The children have been asked to prepare a presentation if they would like to apply for one of the positions. The children have been continuing to impress us with their knowledge of place value in Maths, including negative numbers and rounding. We have really enjoyed the story of Beowulf as our class text. We are basing lots of our English and reading work around this for the rest of this term. Alongside all of this, the Leopards have had some amazing sessions in Music and PE and have been impressing all of their adults.

Fortnight beginning 02.09.19

What a great start we have had to Year 5! The children have settled in very well and are looking very smart in their new shirts and ties. They have enjoyed researching and writing fact files about leopards, as this is our class name. We have already had some brilliant pieces of home learning brought in to class, ranging from stories to times table grids. Keep up the good work, Leopards!
