Year 1 (The Penguins)

Fortnight Beginning 20.1.20 - 27.1.20

Over the last few weeks in Year 1, we have taken a different approach to our English. Before beginning any writing, we have become word collectors and we are collecting as many words as we can to develop our vocabulary. We then use these words in our writing. The children are blowing us away with how fantastic their efforts have been. We have been securing our knowledge of counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s in Maths ready to begin learning multiplication. We are excited to learn new skills. Reading and securing our phonic knowledge is a big focus for us in Year 1. We are just finishing recapping our phase 3 and phase 5 sounds and are having lots of practice recognising these in words. Please keep reading with us at home to help us become sound superheroes.

Fortnight Beginning 6.1.20 - 13.1.20

Year 1 have had an amazing start to the New Year. We have been exploring the traditional tale of Goldilocks and The Three Bears. We have taken part in a range of activities relating to the story including character descriptions, hot seating and crime scene investigating to help us decide if Goldilocks was guilty or not guilty. We had divided opinions on this.

In Science, we have re visited our knowledge of the animal groups with a classifying activity and have now started to explore the different types of eaters there are. We know lots of facts about the different animal groups especially mammals. Don’t forget to look at the science knowledge organiser to help your child remember more.

We have started to look at money in Maths and are trying to remember what the value of each coin is. We have worked super hard and cannot wait to learn even more.

Fortnight Beginning 25.11.19 - 2.12.19

The weeks are just flying by in Year 1 and as usual we have been super busy. Not only have we had lots of practices for our superb nativity performances, but we have also had lots of learning to do too. We linked our nativity performance with our RE learning and learnt about Christian celebrations and what Christians believe Christmas is all about. We also discovered what advent was too.

In Maths, we have been learning how to tell the time to the hour and half past the hour. We have blown our adults away with how amazing we are at this. Challenge us at home and let us impress you too.

Fortnight Beginning 11.11.19 - 18.11.19

Over the last fortnight we have been recapping our addition and subtraction using the number line. Some of us have moved on to worded problems and working out if we need to add or subtract. We have had to use our ‘don’t forget elephant memories’ to remember what the symbols mean and how to use a number line.

In other learning, we have researched fairy doors and drawn our model for designing a fairy door in DT. We are hoping to be able to invite our parents and carers in to help us make our design into reality.

We have spent lots of time practicing for our nativity ‘The Innspectors’. We are now experts with the songs and are getting really good with our words. We can’t wait to show you next week.

Weeks Beginning 14.10.19 - 4.11.19

We have been working super hard these last few weeks Year 1. We have been introduced to a new subject (DT) and begun our research into what we would like our design to look like. We used the devices to do our research and we felt very grown up.

In Computing, we are looking at the changes in Information Technology and what Information Technology actually means. We were so surprised to see what a computer used to look like. Coupled with this, we made predictions about what changes we thought we might see in the future.

We have also been busy in our other areas of learning. Ask your child what we have been learning about.

Fortnight Beginning 30.9.19 - 7.10.19

We have been busy bees in Year 1. We have been challenging ourselves by having a go at subtraction on the number line. Some of us have even had a go at working out the answers to some worded questions. We have done amazingly well!

We have been re writing our story ‘The Pirates of Scurvy Sands’ in English. This is the first time that the children have had to write at length and they have blown us away with how fantastic they are.

In other areas, we have completed our learning of the changes in farming; challenge us and ask us what we know.

Fortnight beginning 16.9.19 - 23.9.19

The last two weeks have been jam packed for us in Year 1. We have learnt what nouns, adjectives and verbs are and had a go writing our own noun phrases. This has been a challenge for us to put the words in the right position but we have got better every day.

Maths has been fun using our place value knowledge to begin adding numbers together. Some of us have had a go at using a number line whilst others have used numicon. The children have really impressed all the adults with this.

Jeffery our class fox has been keeping his eye out for children trying really hard and has now visited two children’s homes for the weekend. We really enjoy sharing his adventures in class and can’t wait to see who he chooses this week.

Fortnight beginning 2.9.19 - 9.9.19

The children have got off to an absolutely amazing start since the beginning of the school year. They have had lots of new routines to absorb and a complete change in how they learn. They have taken it all in their stride and we are super impressed with them.

The trickiest thing to get into the routine of doing has been our morning job that we have to complete before assembly time. They did do these in Reception, however we now do them in our books and the children have had the challenge of finding the correct page before starting. We are beginning to master it now.

We have spent some time learning what each subject is actually all about before we go into the content as most children have never realised they have been learning about things such as Science and Geography. The children have had so many new things going on since joining Year 1, they have been fantastic and you should be really proud of them.

We can’t wait to continue our learning adventure together!
